Hot on the heels of Chase & Status comes another artist nurtured by Ram Records and destined to Big Things, with the release of his hotly anticipated debut album.
One of the biggest names in drum and bass circles for the last few years, Subfocus has managed to maintain an impeccable reputation while enjoying some crossover success thanks to the constant support of Zane Lowe and Annie Mac at Radio 1, with past singles such as ‘X Ray’ and ‘Airplane’ enjoying frequent airplay, and his recent top 40 ‘Rockit’ making the Radio 1 B list as well as getting numerous ‘rewinds’ on dancefloors.
This debut album took a long time in the making, but was well worth the wait. Over 13 perfectly crafted tracks of astonishing variety, Subfocus establishes himself as a major production force in electronic music, with subtle references as diverse as Gorgio Moroder, Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, Daft Punk and FSOL, nods to trance, house and techno music, and great contributions to other bass-inspired sounds such as dubstep and bassline house, alongside some massive drum and bass tracks.
This sheer diversity reflects not only Sub Focus’ open mind, but a real trend for a more global dance scene. ‘I just want to be known as someone who just makes good dance music’ he recently told Mixmag. This album is the perfect way to achieve this.
