Chris Carrier is one of those rare kinds of artists that have an omnipresent quality and yet do not seek to make their name bigger than the music itself. You may not even know it but there is a 99% chance you have experienced some dancefloor-based elation at the hands of the Parisian maestro. With over 100 production credits under his belt, he’s been an underground icon for the past decade. Never chasing the limelight, almost darting around it in all manner of guises and musical styles, Carrier is nevertheless revered today as one of the most prolific and gifted producers on the dance scene today.
With output as diverse as they come, Carrier has dabbled freely in everything from house to hip-hop, drum n bass to minimal to techno and electro, funk and disco, founding a whole fistful of highly regarded labels in the industry. Over the course of his career he has established the renowned Adult Only imprint, Chronobrain, Combustible, Taka, X86 and Direct Art and worked under a variety of aliases.
Around 2003 he started attracting label heavyweights Get Physical
, Crack & Speed, Brique Rouge
, Robsoul, Kill Brique, and Freak n’ Chic bringing to each of them a version of his own musical vision and putting the underground star firmly in the forefront of the new French electronic movement. Becoming more sought-after than ever for his DJ skill, he managed to permeate thenotorious US market with gigs in Georgia, San Francisco, Denver, Las Vegas and Miami and still regularly plays in Europe’s clubbing capitals: London, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam and Milan, to name a few.
His impact on the industry ever growing, Carrier tirelessly created and remixed tracks for a diverse selection of labels over the next few years. In 2008 as well as original solo and collaborative productions he remixed Matthew Dear
’s ‘Dog Days’on Spectral
and Kris Wadsworth
’s ‘Keep Pushin’ on Adult Only. 2009 saw Carrier connect with Jef K’s Silver Network
imprint and a string of hit EPs followed including ‘Morning’ with the disco house anthem ‘I’m In Love Today‘ and ‘Chaka’, a tribute to the Disco queen herself and dripping with old school funk.
As well as lending his cosmic touch to numerous remix projects including Ralph Falcon’s ‘Every Now And Then’ on Nervous Records
in 2009, the original productions continued to flourish in 2010. Joining forces with Jef K and Chicago legend Chez Damier
to form The Gathering, together they were responsible for a track that epitomized the summer. ‘In My System’ garnered huge support from all major house DJs, and invaded dancefloors worldwide – ultimately charting at no.7 in Resident Advisor’s Top 50 tracks of the year.
Not one to rush things, Chris Carrier, only released his debut artist album on faithful label Robsoul
in April 2010. An ode to his home city and homage to his early influences, the ‘Gosse De Paris’ LP is classic Carrier – a collection of essential house cuts infused with plenty of Disco, Funk and Soul. 2011 is already shaping up to be yet another eventful year with a slew of new productions in the pipeline for Soweso
, Landed Records
, a remix for regular cohort Phil Weeks’s new album and the second release from his freshly launched label Soundcarrier – a more techno orientated vinyl only imprint. Whatever the adopted style, Carrier’s intrinsically free musical spirit will always aspire to mix it up and above all else keep the dancefloor brigade happy and grooving.
